Pierre Bastien's Robots of Sound

Pierre Bastien is a French composer and multi-instrumentalist who travels the globe with an 80 member strong robotic orchestra built from Meccano. The mechanical musicians, often propelled by circuit bent turntables, jam on everything from Chinese lutes to violins. Once the robots lock it down, Pierre steps in with some human powered accompaniment, usually on trumpet. To top it all off, during the live performances the production is videographed by four cameras and projected in real time.

Bastien's music sounds like those fantastic childhood dreams we all once had when our minds were loose and free. Whenever I listen to this stuff waves of nostalgia wash over me. It's all very unusual, and I cannot wait to check it out live.

Special thanks to the RE:Flux in Moncton for helping to make this happen. Expect it to be a highlight of our festival.

  1. Great article. Lots of good statistical information found right there. Interesting to see how much all those big blogs are making.
